![]() Suede-like seat inserts help prevent slip sliding around when gravity takes hold. These supportive perches provide plenty of side bolstering and sufficient adjustment to suit most drivers. Standing-out from the uninspiring surroundings though are exceptionally good front seats. There are plenty of low-rent materials and construction quality is typical of the segment. Front seats highlight cabin The Cobalt's cabin is what you'd expect from its "economy" car roots. Unfortunately, the sleek lines of the Cobalt result in a restrictive trunk opening that significantly limits the size of objects it can swallow despite the availability of plenty of interior volume thanks to folding rear seats. A smaller, more tolerable spoiler arrives as standard SS fare. This abysmal piece of plastic interferes with rearward vision and undermines the vehicle's credibility as a serious performer by appearing cartoonish. Subtle? Well, everything sans the garish bi-winged spoiler atop the trunk of my tester. I like the cleanliness of its lines and the subtlety of its "SS" add-ons. That enables it to project a sleeker, sportier coupe-like image while still seating five passengers. Sporty coupe appearance Unlike most of its competitors, the Cobalt SS gets by with two doors rather than four. Sleek coupe-like lines distinguish this little brute from its competitors. ![]() It's a front-wheel-drive coupe that for 2008 is fitted with a turbocharger rather than last year's supercharger. It shares its underpinnings with the Buick Encore and Chevrolet Spark and Trax as it is classed as a subcompact car rather than a compact one like before.A number of compact relatively inexpensive rockets have come to market lately, such as the Dodge SRT4 and the Mazdaspeed3. The Cobalt name continued to be used by the American automaker when they launched a second generation in emerging markets such as Brazil and Columbia. This car was eventually replaced by the Cruze in 2010, which was originally introduced in 2008 – a performance SS version wasn’t carried over to this model. Safety ratings were pretty good for the Cobalt with the IIHSA rating it 5 out of 5 stars across many disciplines, impressive for such a small car. In 2007 (2 years after the introduction of the car) the engines received an overhaul that vastly improved the fuel economy.įuel economy is an important factor for many buyers of compact cars and this helped the model retain much of its high sales volume for a few more years.
